Hairy Woodpecker

Hairy Woodpeckers look very much like the smaller Downy Woodpecker. It can be difficult to distinguish the species because they are so similar. The Hairy Woodpecker is closer to the size of a Blue Jay while the Downy is quite a bit smaller. The male Hairy Woodpecker has two red spots on the back of his head whereas the male Downy has just one! They can be seen here year-round.
